Scavland Game Modes: Explorer vs Returner vs Iron Man
What the Explorer, Returner and Iron Man modes in Scavland change, based on official patch notes, and how to pick one for your first run.
What game modes does Scavland have?
Scavland launched in Early Access on September 4, 2026. Its modes are Explorer, Returner and Iron Man, plus the tutorial. Explorer did not exist at launch: NoShadow added it in the Day One patch (Update 0.5.169) as a response to early feedback, for players who want to focus on exploration and progression with a less punishing experience.
Everything on this page comes from the official patch notes. Where we give advice, we say so.
How do the modes compare?
| Feature | Explorer | Returner | Iron Man |
|---|---|---|---|
| Combat | More forgiving | Standard | Standard |
| Job money and reputation | Faster | Standard | Standard |
| Sell price bonus | 1.2x money when selling (0.6.0) | None | None |
| Maximum stamina | 150 | 100 | 100 |
| On death | Keep equipment (not all backpack items) | Continue or Load Game | New Game or Exit |
| Autosave | Enabled by default (Day One patch) | Not specified for these modes in the notes; since 0.7.0 every run has its own autosave slot |
The death screen options come from the rebuilt Death Screen in Update 0.7.0. The tutorial offers Try Again. Since 0.7.0, each run also keeps its own autosave slot, which protects the save you are currently playing.
What does Explorer mode change?
The Day One patch lists four Explorer changes: more forgiving combat, Jobs that reward money and reputation faster, keeping your equipment when you die (but not every backpack item), and autosave enabled. Update 0.6.0 added a 1.2x money bonus when selling items and raised Explorer’s maximum stamina to 150.
Some quality-of-life changes apply to every mode, not only Explorer. The Day One patch doubled player stamina for everyone and made lit campfires heal you when your energy and hydration are good. Update 0.6.0 added sleeping in beds, and Update 0.8.0 added a free stamina zone over the main city plus Dogface fast travel after the quest On the Road.
How do Returner and Iron Man handle death?
In Returner, dying sends you to a death screen with Continue and Load Game, so a bad fight costs you progress since your last save rather than the whole run. In Iron Man, the death screen only offers New Game and Exit: a death ends the playthrough. Both modes use the standard 100 maximum stamina and do not get Explorer’s combat, Job or sell-price bonuses.
Because combat changed a lot in Update 0.8.0 (enemy armor, armor penetration, smarter AI), Iron Man runs are harsher than they were at launch. Read the ammo and armor penetration guide before committing to one.
Which mode should you pick?
Our suggestion, not an official recommendation:
-
First playthrough or story focus: Explorer. You keep your gear on death and progress faster, which makes it easier to learn traders, Jobs and the map of Zalesye.
-
You want tension but not permanent loss: Returner. Deaths hurt, but loading a save is always available.
-
You already know the game: Iron Man, ideally after you have learned which factions wear armor and where your safe routes are.
